A University of Colorado at Colorado Springs police officer is among three dead after a lone gunman opened fire in and around a Planned Parenthood facility in Colorado Springs, Colorado on Friday afternoon.

Officer Garrett Swasey, a six-year veteran of the police force, was shot and killed after responding to the scene of the shooting. Five other officers along with four civilians were treated at local hospitals for injuries.

The shooter, 57-year old Robert Dear, was taken into custody after a six-hour standoff with police. Dear's motives have not yet been identified.

Officer Swasey, 44, was married with two young children.

Kurt Aichele, pastor of the church where Swasey attended, said, "It’s not the first time that he’s been placed in harm’s way. He’s an absolute man of courage."
