Wisconsin K9 Officer and Former Green Beret Killed in Vehicle Accident

A United States Army veteran, former Green Beret, and three year veteran Wisconsin police officer has died from injuries sustained in a head-on collision on Monday.

Officer Ryan Copeland, 33, was traveling westbound on County Highway N, near the town of Albion, when a vehicle crossing the highway pulled in front of his patrol car and struck him head-on.

He sustained major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officer Copeland had been with the McFarland police department since 2013 and was a member of the K9 unit. He was on his way to pick up his K9 partner when the accident occurred.

Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney said of Copeland, "Not only is he a hometown hero, but he's a national hero, having been a military officer and deployed on at least two separate occasions before he returned home to serve the citizens of McFarland."
