Activists in California Call on Campus Police to Shed Bulletproof Vests

In a particularly strange demand, a group calling themselves "Oxy United For Black Liberation" has demanded that all campus security officers at Occidental College stop wearing bulletproof vests.

The demand reads, in part, "Immediate demilitarization of Campus Safety. Includes, but is not limited to: removal of bulletproof vest from uniform, exclusion of military and external police rhetoric from all documents and daily discourse..."

Campus security officers do not carry weapons and their bulletproof vests serve as one of their only forms of defense.

The strange command is but one of 14 such demands that the protestors are calling for. Among the others include the resignation of the school president and the hiring of "physicians of color" to treat "issues of identity."

Several students have taken over the first floor of the school's administration building while waiting for their demands to be met.
