A North Miami Beach police officer critically injured in an on-duty vehicle crash on Sunday morning is improving.
Officer Nicole Mood, 22, was severely injured after her patrol vehicle was struck by another car that pulled in front of her and sent her vehicle flying into a light pole.
The accident was so violent that the officer had to be freed from her car.
The driver of the other vehicle attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by police.
Officer Mood was transported to a local hospital for treatment and had been listed in critical condition; however, her condition began to improve on Monday.
Intermin Police Chief Bill Hernandez said, "She is a strong, young girl and we are optimistic she will pull through."
Hernandez cautioned, however, that Officer Mood "was not out of the woods yet" and that, "the next 24 to 48 hours are crucial."
