Man Accused of Running Over Off-Duty Dallas Police Officer Had Been Deported Three Times Before

A man who ran over a Dallas police officer working an off-duty security job was in the country illegally and had been deported three times prior, according to police.

The incident occurred on November 9 at the Kalua Discotheque in Dallas, TX.

Dallas police officer Ed Lujan had been working an off-duty security job at the club when he assisted other officers in the removal of a patron, Eduardo Gonzalez-Rios, 29, who was told to leave the club and premises.

After being removed from the club, however, Gonzalez-Rios instead got into an SUV and twice ran over Officer Lujan, who was in uniform. Witnesses described Gonzalez-Rios as backing over Officer Lujan before pulling forward and running him over completely.

Lujan suffered multiple broken bones including a fractured skull and vertebrae. He was transported to a local hospital where he continues treatment for his injuries.

Two other officers on scene opened fire on Gonzalez-Rios, injuring him. Gonzalez-Rios was taken into custody.

It has since been reported that Gonzalez-Rios had been deported multiple times from the United States, first in 2004 and most recently in 2011. It was unclear exactly when Gonzalez-Rios again entered the country prior to assaulting Officer Lujan.
