A Baltimore police officer was shot and wounded on Wednesday evening after confronting an armed gunman in Northwest Baltimore. Officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect, who was killed.
The incident began after officers witnessed the man walking along the 3700 block of Oakmont, Ave, holding a gun. When they confronted the man, the suspect opened fire on the officers.
One officer, a five year veteran, was struck in the leg and transported to a local hospital for treatment. The suspect has not yet been identified.
T.J. Smith, a police spokesman, said, "We have officers that are dedicated to addressing the crime that we're seeing in our community, daily, and these officers were a part of that team going after people, like this suspect, who have guns, that are on the street trying to harm communities. This suspect produced that weapon and that's what led to this incident."
