A veteran New Orleans police officer was shot while driving in the Desire neighborhood in the Upper 9th Ward on Sunday night.
NOPD officials said that the officer, identified as Commander Derek Frick, was driving toward his father's house when the occupant of a passing car fired gunshots at him. Frick was not in uniform at the time.
Commander Frick was struck in the neck but managed to pull his vehicle over where a number of citizens helped him obtain medical attention.
The suspect was described as driving a brown or gold SUV, possibly a GMC or Chevrolet.
Although listed in critical condition, the NOPD said that Commander Frick's injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
No possible motive for the shooting has been identified.
