Federal officials uncovered a massive, nearly half-mile long drug smuggling tunnel beneath the United States-Mexico border on Wednesday night.
22 people were arrested and nearly $6 million in marijuana seized.
U.S. officials located the U.S. terminus of the tunnel in a warehouse in Otay Mesa, a town south of San Diego. The entry point in the warehouse led down nearly 30 feet to the tunnel, which itself had a sophisticated ventilation and rail system.
U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy stated, "We see a super tunnel open for business once every year or so."
Although such sophisticated tunnels are less frequently located, more than 75 drug smuggling tunnels have been found by U.S. officials since 2010.
