Veteran Officer Shot and Killed While Guarding Prisoner at Local Hospital

A 24-year veteran officer with the Aitken County Sheriff's Office was shot and killed while guarding a prisoner at a local hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota. 

Inspector Steven Sandberg, 60, was guarding Danny Leroy Hammond, 50, a suspect in a domestic violence incident who was being treated for an unidentified ailment, when Hammond assaulted Sandberg and wrestled the his gun away from him. Hammond then shot and killed Inspector Sandberg.

Another deputy managed to subdue Hammond and take him into custody; however, Hammond subsequently died. An autopsy is pending.

Inspector Sandberg was the 100th officer killed in the line of duty this year.
